Background
The Clifton Cellars is one of Bristol's finest independent wine shops so when the opportunity came along to join forces with Winedrop it simply could not be missed, Windedrop first went online in 2001/2 and quickly became recognised by 'Shopsafe' as 5 stars. They check "the security, delivery and range of goods and prices" of their approved online shops - so you can shop with confidence! Their seal, together with that of 'Shopsafer' appears at the bottom of the home page. The Clifton Cellars (www.cliftoncellars.co.uk) has been in business for over 20 years and has built up a reputation for fine wines, fair prices and an outstanding knowledge of wines. We are now able to serve all our customers with an excellent online presence as well as continue to serve all our Winedrop customers in the way they have become used to.
Finding what you want
The details in our own search engine are regularly updated but in case of difficulty it may be that you have omitted an apostrophe or an accent... and if you, like us, have trouble producing accents, just remember that to produce an acute accent (like the one in Rosé) you probably need to hold down Alt and then press 0233. Or, if that doesn't work, try pressing on Ctrl, Alt and the letter e all together. You may discover that we also stock roses!...
You can search by wine or grape type and there is a country of origin/category listing down the left hand margin of every page. The grape types listed in the general search facility are normally the principal or leading ones and are not necessarily exhaustive or exclusive, the minority players among them not always getting a mention (life was ever thus). But the wine's tasting notes and detail page will generally give you more information. We have also introduced a grape variety 'directory', which gives a basic background to each grape variety and explanation of some additional wine facts
here. The grape types are searchable within our own site so if you click on the grape type you can generally establish if we stock a wine containing that variety. Though do bear in mind that lesser known grape types in particular often have numerous
synonyms.

Our order system
All online orders are taken on a secure and encrypted server where you can use a credit or debit card with confidence. The payment transactions are taken through SagePay so
we do not handle any card information directly but store this with SagePay. They provide a similar service to tens of thousands of companies and use a range secure methods (for the technically minded these include fraud screening, I.P address blocking and 3D secure). Once on the SagePay systems, all sensitive data is secured using the same internationally recognised 256-bit encryption standards. SagePay is entirely 'Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard' compliant and maintains regular security audits. They are also regularly audited by the banks and banking authorities to ensure that their systems are impenetrable. (And as we all now know the banks are absolute experts in impenetrable systems.) For our part
we do not take your money instantly, but only when we are ready to process your order do we instruct SagePay to 'authorise' the transaction.
It should be noted that where they still survive, some
Maestro debit cards may be able to be processed only by telephone. Possible reasons are outlined
here. If you have difficulty paying by Maestro you probably need to fill in the so-called 3D secure details.
Delivery
We strive for a prompt and smooth distribution service and for mainland England and Wales and lowland Scotland delivery on the day following despatch is standard. Highlands and Islands take a little longer (for details see our delivery details by postcode
here). We also deliver throughout mainland Europe and indeed almost anywhere in the world. Further details are on the delivery page
here. Please excuse us if some of our
packaging is not entirely pristine - we think that provided it does not impair the journey, reusing packaging and giving it another trip will help to minimise waste! Orderdrop will normally confirm despatch of your order to your Email address together with the anticipated delivery date(s).
