Loire Red wines The Loire, one of the more Northernly European vine growing region, offers a wide variety of Red, White and some Rosé wines produced from an equally wide variety of grapes along the length of the river and the different climates. The types and quality of the wines reflect its status as the Garden of France, once the pleasure ground of the French court.
Wine-wise the 'Loire' refers to just the Central and Western sections. The 'continental' climate of Sancerre towards the East contrasts with the mouth of the river where the Gulf Stream warms the Muscadet region.
